Program #1

"Authors of Mystery and Horror"

Chad is pleased to offer his teen program "Authors of Mystery and Horror" to middle and high schools for the 2009-2010 school year. This program is designed to promote interest in the literary works and lives of several famous authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, Arthur Conan Doyle, and even Harry Houdini (Who wrote several books)! Students will witness many spooky and mysterious effects that emphasize the works and the strange connections between the lives of the aforementioned authors. This show is also performed in libraries in GA and SC as part of their Fall/Winter Teen Programs! This is the perfect way to encourage your students to read some classics and have a frighteningly educational experience!

Your students WILL go to your media center to check out these classics after seeing the show! You can see comments from librarians by clicking on the link below!

"Chad, we thoroughly enjoyed having you with us Friday. I don't know who you impressed more, the kids or the teachers who saw your performance! I know you were great, because the kids were entranced and hanging onto each word you said, and that is saying quite a bit! Our kids almost "raced" down to the media center to check out the books you talked about! I'd put up a display and they were "gobbled" up by excited readers. Mystery and horror are favorite subjects of middle schools students and they loved all the gory facts and details you shared! My favorite part of the program was the interaction with the students and seeing them all frantically raise their hands to be selected to participate. Just about all the authors you mentioned are checked out and I have quite a few "on hold" for other students when they are returned! We definitely want you back next year with your new program!" Laura Atkinson, Media Specialist, Johnakin Middle, SC

"Chad, your magic grabbed the students' attention in a way that they didn't realize they were receiving a literacy promotion message! ALL of my magic books are currently checked out; furthermore, I had students asking for Poe and Houdini books all day yesterday! Thanks again for coming, and I hope to work with you again in the future!" Liz Herlong, Media Specialist, Lakeview High, SC

"Chad, by Wednesday morning [show on Tuesday], I had checked out all 8 of my Poe story collections and 3 of his poetry books. I put at least 5 of those books on reserve for other students. In addition to those, 3 Dracula books and 2 Frankenstein books went out. Increased interest in reading - definitely! - and by some guys that don't usually read that much. The magic element woven into the interesting information you shared about the authors and their works was both informative and entertaining. I got many positive remarks from teachers, as well as students! It was a great experience to have you here at our school!" Gayle Forbes, Media Specialist, Riverside Middle

"I believe that your show encouraged reading. Our circulation of books by and about Poe as well as the other authors you covered in your program went up phenomenally! Students were interested in reading more about the stories that you briefly "booktalked" during your "Authors of Mystery and Horror" presentation. I would recommend this show to other educators. It educated under the guise of entertainment (students don't even realize they are learning!). Thanks for doing a great job!" Teresa Gray, Media Specialist, League Academy

Program #2

"Authors of Mystery and Horror" 2.0!

For those schools who have had the whole student body see the original "Authors of Mystery and Horror" Chad is now proud to introduce the all new version of the program! Featuring the following authors and works: H. G. Wells (The Time Machine, War of the Worlds, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and The Invisible Man), Robert Louis Stevenson (Jekyll and Hyde, Treasure Island), and W. W. Jacobs (The Monkey's Paw). The same high quality educational experience you have come to expect with all new stories, authors, and mysterious routines! Don't miss this brand new frighteningly educational experience!

**Several schools have also used the second version of the program for a PTA Family Night show after seeing the original "Authors of Mystery and Horror" program during the day! There will be a HUGE turn out that night as students will bring their parents, friends, and other family members to see the show!**

"Chad, you were fantastic! It went great! The kids were attentive because of the way you presented your material! My kids came back talking about the program and wanted to check out many of the books you mentioned! Your magic was great!!! Very effective and pertained to the subject! How do you do it??!!?? Your presentation was very positive and interesting. You knew your authors and their work! Thank you again sooo much for all you do to encourage our kids to read!" Patricia Pond, Teacher, Greenbrier Middle

"Chad, the kids want to read every author mentioned in the show and one even asked for the book that he said was sure to give you a 'frighteningly educational experience!' I like the interesting, obscure facts that you bring to the show about the authors. It is clear that you have done your research! And, I have to say that I continue to be mystified by your mind reading. I am shopping for different versions of all of the authors' works so that we have something for all of our 5th grade readers. You presenting for our Fifth graders has become a popular tradition at our school at Halloween. They are especially motivated by their classmates participation in the routines!" Deborah Holmes, Media Specialist, Martinez Elementary

"Chad, we loved the show! You motivate these kids to want to read - definitely a positive thing! Several of the teenagers that were present at our library had never been in the public library before. Many of them came to me and told me they were coming back. It's tough to pick out a favorite part of the show. I guess my favorite part was watching the audience response that you got! What a challenge to motivate teenagers! YOU DID IT! I do (and have) recommended this show. Any program that motivates readers is a show that should be shared, especially for this age group!" Barbara Evans, Children's Librarian, Sarah Hightower Regional Library, Rome, GA
